The Beautiful Art of Making Lace

When we were travelling through Sri Lanka I met Sri Romi, in Tissamaharama who taught me the extremely time consuming, the intricate and delicate traditional craft of making lace.

I’ve always been a fan of lace. Amazed at the fine detail and delicate nature, it brings a certain sense of luxury to any piece of fabric. As a confident crocheter, I’ve still never been able to make a big enough piece of lace because it takes FOREVER!

The method Sri Romi uses is called Bobbin Lace. Using thin cotton thread she weaves, twists and braids each strand to create beautiful pieces of fabric.

Live Your Dreams

Sitting in a hammock looking up at a sky full of stars, I can feel the thick sea air on my skin, hear the waves crash in the distance and taste the sweetness of the future.

Arugam Bay has been my favourite place on our Sri Lankan adventure. I’m not sure if it’s the people we’ve met. The place itself. The cold showers. Or the lessons I’ve learnt here. Whatever it is these four days have been magical!

The No Pants Dance

Today we spent the day in Yala Nature Reserve. We wanted to find some leopards 🐆

15 mins into the park and we were among 15 other land rovers racing through the nature reserve to “hunt” down the leopards. There were exhaust fumes and dust flying everywhere and the driver was bashing through the vegetation like his life depended on it! 😭 It was unpleasant. And I’m sure the animals in the park were traumatised too. Not the kind of safari we were used to 😤

We asked our driver to not chase after the poor leopard. But instead to randomly drive to see what we could find instead.
